And while all of this exists, it is only one small part of the island.
Once you leave Waikiki behind, Oahu becomes something entirely different.
I stayed on Oahu for ten days, and while I genuinely enjoyed Waikiki, I would not choose it again as the base for a honeymoon or romantic trip for my couples.

Oahu itself, though, is exceptional. The island contains more variety per square mile than almost anywhere in the Pacific. Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head and the North Shore and Lanikai Beach and incredible ocean wildlife are all within driving distance of each other. For couples who want a Hawaii honeymoon with history, adventure, culture, and genuine beauty, Oahu delivers all of it.

Oahu Is Not One Thing
Most people picture Waikiki when they hear Oahu. What they are less likely to know is how different each part of the island feels.
The south shore where Waikiki sits is urban, energetic, and full of amenities. The east side has some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii, Lanikai and Kailua are genuinely stunning and significantly quieter. The North Shore is a different island entirely: small surf towns, legendary winter waves, local food trucks, and the kind of laid-back energy you do not find anywhere near Honolulu. The west coast around Ko Olina offers calm water and resort properties specifically built for a quieter experience.
For honeymoon couples, my honest recommendation is to look at Ko Olina or the east side around Kailua before defaulting to Waikiki. You will still be on Oahu with access to everything the island offers, but your home base will feel more like a vacation and less like a city hotel.
Pearl Harbor
I did the Pearl Harbor cruise during Memorial Weekend. I want to be specific about this because the timing added a dimension to the experience.
Seeing the USS Arizona Memorial from the water, with the ship still visible beneath the surface, is something I have not forgotten. The water is clear enough to see the hull of the ship, and knowing there are still crew members entombed below is not something you can experience from a distance and feel nothing. Coming back from a Pearl Harbor visit changes the rest of your day in a way no resort excursion does.
If you are going to Oahu, Pearl Harbor belongs on the itinerary. Not as a perfunctory checkbox but as a genuine experience. The audio tour, the boat to the Arizona Memorial, and the time to walk through the exhibits. It is meaningful in a way few travel experiences are.
Diamond Head Crater
The Diamond Head hike is not long but it earns the view. The trail climbs through the volcanic crater to a summit overlooking Waikiki and the coastline below, and the combination of the volcanic terrain and the ocean spread out in every direction is the kind of view worth getting up early for.
Go early. The midday heat and the crowds at Diamond Head are both significant, and neither makes the hike more enjoyable. A morning start delivers a cooler climb and better light at the top.
Beaches
Waikiki Beach
Waikiki has its place. The surf is gentle, the strip is beautiful at sunset, and for couples who want to be in the middle of the action with dining, shopping, and entertainment steps away, it works. I had fun there.
For a honeymoon, I would stay elsewhere and come to Waikiki for a day rather than using it as a home base. The difference in atmosphere between Waikiki and the east-side beaches is significant.

Lanikai and Kailua
Lanikai Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The sand is fine and white, the water is a particular shade of turquoise you genuinely cannot photograph accurately, and it is far enough from the resort corridor to feel like a discovery rather than a destination.
Kailua Beach, right next to it, is excellent for kayaking and paddleboarding. The conditions are consistent and the shoreline is long and uncrowded compared to Waikiki.

North Shore Beaches
During the summer, the North Shore beaches are calm and ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. In the winter months, the waves become what the North Shore is famous for, enormous swells attracting professional surfers from around the world.
I paddleboarded on the North Shore and the combination of the coastline and the mountains behind it is hard to describe accurately. Even if you are not there for surfing season, the drive up the coast and the time in the water is worth a full day.

Ocean Wildlife – Turtles and Dolphins
I swam with sea turtles and dolphins on Oahu. Both wonderful experiences.
The sea turtles at Laniakea Beach on the North Shore come to shore regularly in the afternoons and can also be found in the water at several snorkeling spots around the island. Being in the water alongside one of them and having it simply continue swimming, completely unbothered, is one of those wildlife moments I think about long after the trip.
The dolphin experience happened on a morning boat tour. Spinner dolphins are present in Hawaiian waters year-round and they are genuinely playful in the water. Spinning, surfacing close to the boat, completely comfortable with human proximity.
For couples who have never had either experience, these are not tourist traps. They are the real thing and they belong on any Oahu itinerary.

Several tour operators run these from Waikiki and the experience ranges from a brief surf-style run through the waves to a longer paddle along the coast. Worth adding to the itinerary for at least one session.

The Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore is a full-day experience covering the cultures of Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, Fiji, and New Zealand. For couples with any interest in the Pacific beyond what a resort can offer, it is worth the time.
